South Florida rapper and singer XXXTentacion has been proclaimed dead at the age of 20. Born Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, the rapper was, as reported by TMZ, leaving a motorcycle dealership in his native Broward County, when two men in a black SUV, dressed in hoodies and red masks, robbed him of a Louis Vuitton bag and then shot and killed him. After being rushed into the hospital and placed in critical condition, the Broward County Sheriff Department officially proclaimed Onfroy dead at 5:40 P.M. EST.
Onfroy began recording music at the age of 16 under the name of XXXTentacion, uploading his first songs onto SoundCloud in 2014. Eventually, he sparked a close relationship with fellow Broward County rapper Ski Mask the Slump God and created a collective titled Members Only. In December 2015, Onfroy uploaded the aggressive “Look At Me!”, which, over a year after its release, would eventually propel Onfroy into a viral sensation.
In October 2016, Onfroy was arrested on charges of aggravated and domestic battery, and of false imprisonment. It was during his arrest that “Look At Me!” became a hit, leading Onfroy to sign a deal with Empire Records weeks before being released on probation. The summer after release would find him release his first commercial mixtape, titled Revenge, and embark on a short-lived tour for it. Onfroy followed it up in August with his debut studio album, 17. However, shortly after, accusations surfaced of severe abuse, witness harassment, and tampering charges, leading Spotify to shortly remove his music from promoted playlists as part of its Hate Content & Hateful Conduct policy. However, his music was quickly restored after backlash arised. Onfroy released his second studio album, ?, in March of this year, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200.
We will remain on the lookout for any more information following Onfroy’s death. Condolences go out to his family and friends.
